With its beautiful views and golden sunsets it quickly became very evident to me why Santorini, and specifically Oia, is one of the most photographed places in the world. It sure is a place that lives up to the hype! In the whitewashed streets of Oia you will find photo opportunities everywhere you look. Since some places are private and hard to enter, I definitely recommend carefully selecting where to stay when travelling to the iconic cycladic island of Santorini.
Where to stay
One thing that should be on your radar when looking for a place to stay in Oia is staying in one of the renowned cave houses with a view overlooking the caldera.
MyBlue cave house with postcard perfect view and private pool: We decided to really splurge on a nice place to stay in Oia and went for this Airbnb with a postcard perfect view of the place Oia is most known for – the two churches with blue domes and the blue church bell. This Airbnb with a private plunge pool on the roof was located so perfectly and gave us opportunities to photograph an otherwise really hard place to access and photograph.
Where to eat
PitoGyros: This grillhouse in Oia has the best prices and serves the famous Greek dish gyros which is a pita wrap with french fries, tzatziki and fresh vegetables inside.
Lolita’s Gelato: This instagram friendly gelateria is an absolute dream with its pink interior and blush tones. And the homemade gelato is the best you will find.
Skiza: This two-leveled restaurant has great views overlooking the Aegean Ocean and the caldera and serves great homemade food for great prices.
Where to go
Hike from Fira to Oia: This 10 km. hike is not an easy one due to all the mountains and stairs you have to climb but the views make it so worth it. On this hike you cross the beautiful village of Imerovigli and the famous Skaros Rock.
Swim out to small island of Nisis Agios Nikolaos: This island is next to Amoudi Bay and is a very fun swim away is you are the adventurous and daring type like me. The island makes the perfect place for cliff jumping and the feeling of being out on the ocean. But be aware of the very strong waves you have to cross when swimming to the island.
Explore Oia and the beautiful artisan stores:
Watch the sunset from Oia Castle: You might think a castle in Oia sounds fancy but all there’s left from the castle is some old ruins. But watching the sunset here is a once in a lifetime experience and the atmosphere is so good. Be prepared for a hundreds of sunset lovers like yourself, come early, bring a drink and snacks and you will be prepared for the best time.
And last but not least: FIND THOSE INSTAGRAM PLACES. Like the windmills in Oia, Kastro house, watch the sunset and take pictures like never before. Because I promise you, Oia will not disappoint.
