The thing we must not forget-why prayer is a vital part of being a Christian

“I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time-waking and sleeping. It does not change God – it changes me.” C.S. Lewis

Prayer is a really essential part of being a Christian and having fellowship with God. But why? Below are 5 reasons why prayer is so important.

  1. Jesus was constantly praying and so should we. So why did Jesus need to pray?
  • He loved being with His father and enjoyed His company
  • He knew He could do nothing by himself and He really believed it
  • It was His source of power – there would be no miracles without constant communion with His father
  • He knew spiritual authority came through prayer

Throughout the gospels we see Jesus praying:

  • He got up early to pray (Mark 1:35-38)
  • He often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Luke 5:16)
  • He stayed up all night praying before choosing his disciples (Luke 6:12)
  1. Prayer and miracles go hand in hand, because something happens in the spiritual realm when we pray, though we may not always notice or feel it. God’s presence is so much more than a feeling.
  2. Prayer should be the first thing we think of when we run into problems, not a last resort as it so often does. Often we only think about praying, when we have done everything we could and we are thinking of prayer as the last thing we can help by doing. Prayer should really be the first thing to think of when we run into problems, because prayer is so powerful. When we pray we are no longer alone with our problems and trying to handle them ourselves, but we have invited our mighty God to come and help us and when He is on our side, nothing can really go that wrong. I’m not good myself to run to God as the first person I run to in times of trouble and sorrow, it’s so easy to run to other people, because they will answer you immediately, but the truth is that without God there really comes no long-term help.
  3. We are called to be in a relationship with God and that relationship is connected by prayer – your conversation to God and though you may not always hear Him, He is always listening.
  4. Moves of God are always preceded by prayer. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV):

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. “

We also see examples of this throughout Christian history:

Early Church

In the Upper Room “the disciples were of one accord in constant prayer” (Acts 1:14). Pentecost came to that prayer room, 3,000 people were saved and history was changed forever.

Jeremiah 29:12-13:

12 “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

How do we seek God with all our hearts? By praying and being willing to listen for the answer.
